A Maryville Christmas

Posted by on Dec 6, 2017 in Arts/Entertainment | 0 comments

On Dec. 5 at 7p.m., the MC Division of Fine Arts hosted a performance of “A Maryville Christmas.” This is the second year that this performance was put on by the entire Fine Arts Division. In previous years, each department in the division would put on their own separate performances, keeping the proceeds from those shows for their individual departments. But now, perhaps moved by the spirit of the holidays, the whole division works together to create one massive, festive celebration and splits the proceeds equally. The performance consisted of seven different Maryville College music ensembles including The MC Concert Choir, The MC Orchestra, The MC Community Chorus, The MC3Band, The Scottie Singers, The Highland Chorale and the MC Theatre Department. The participating groups, which include over 150 performers when combined, have been prepping for the event since early...

Keepers of The Covenant to unveil new project

On the evening of Nov. 13, 2017, senior Grace Plemmons began conducting interviews by the Covenant Stone on campus, supervised by Dr. Jesse Smith, lecturer in Mathematics, and filmed by both sophomore Ryan Lay and multimedia communications specialist Jacob Haskew. This marked the beginning of the new project on campus revolving around the Maryville College Covenant. This project seeks to investigate what the covenant means to people who live it every day. The Keepers of the Covenant organization was started on Oct. 20, 2000 under MC President Gerald Gibson. Every year since, there have been eight student members, three staff and three faculty members who are deemed as “Keepers of the Covenant.” If you’ve ever been to a Covenant Ceremony you can thank the Keepers for organizing it, as well as developing the “Spirit of the Covenant Awards.” Starting...

MC students to MC staff

This week’s alumni spotlight turns to David Clifford, a former Bonner scholar and class of 2016. A commonality between all alumni I’ve interviewed has been the absence of an initial plan to come back, in a way it just sort of finds everybody differently. Clifford’s case was no different.    When he graduated, he was eager to move on to the next stage of his life.     “Leaving campus is typically part of that,” he said. It’s not that he didn’t admire Maryville College, but he had started to outgrow MC as a student.    Clifford was encouraged to apply for a newly opened position by some of his connections at the college, and now he can be found coordinating the current Bonners, Center for Campus Ministry (CCM) scholarships, setting up meetings and keeping up with outreach in the community. But what...

Bio, bears and bucks, oh my!

At a Liberal Arts college, it’s not unusual to mix interests such as Biology and Photography for example; when Dr. Crain takes 12 students into the Great Smoky Mountains with a bunch of cameras, the consequence is very unique. The results of this are calendars, featuring photographs taken by Dr. Crain’s J-term Wildlife Photography class, which are edited and put together by Mary Workman, MC’s publication manager. Each month features a student-shot photograph, a picture of the student, as well as the title and a short description of their photo. The class may be called Bio200, but that doesn’t mean that you have to be a biology major to participate. The featured students range in year from freshman to seniors, and students in majors from finance to theater were peppered throughout the biology majors. The photographs included included in...
