Career Center extends its walk-in hours
The Career Center here at Maryville College is making things a lot easier for busy students. This year the Career Center has implemented new walk-in hours every day of the week. Walk-in hours are a great resource to help students out with resumes, setting up appointments with Career Center staff, helping apply for jobs using Handshake, or anything else students need help with.
These hours are held by Peer Career Coaches. Coaches are students here at Maryville College, and they know exactly what tools students need to succeed. “We launched consistent Walk-In hours at the Career Center in the Fall of 2017 to increase access and availability of our services to students,” said Sarah Yeaple, Assitant Director of the Career Center.
“To ensure we could sustain the program and student access, we trained our Peer Coaches to work with students one-on-one, too. At first, we offered walk-in hours with our Peer Coaches and at least one full-time staff member at all times. We moved to an independent model, to empower our coaches to grow their ability to help their fellow students,” said Yeaple.
“We don’t expect that the Peer Career Coaches will be able to answer every question that students might have, but they can start the answer to any question and work with their peers to discover answers together and refer to the Career Center staff, when needed.”
Yeaple said, “We also know that sometimes students are less intimidated by asking questions of their peers, rather than a staff person. We want our services and resources to be open to all students and want students to take advantage of them around their schedule and according to their comfort level. We are excited to continue to grow the program and keep serving students to the best of our ability! Our Peer Career Coaches are awesome!”
Another new option for Career Center walk-in hours is now on Sunday from 4 p.m. till 10 p.m. in Thaw Hall. The same as regular walk-in hours just in a more common place for student activity. This time is perfect for students getting last minute homework or other things done. By having these walk-in hours, the Career Center has been able to help more students out they may not have time during the week.
Don’t want to leave your room? No problem! The Career Center has another option for you. By liking the Maryville College Career Center Facebook page on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.; you have the opportunity to live chat over messenger with Peer Career Coach, Lishika Lange. She is studying abroad this semester and will be available at those times to assist students!
Students are already utilizing these resources. Claire Willenbrink, Maryville College Sophomore who has been to walk-in hours said, “It’s nice to have the option to get a second opinion on a job application or resume.”
Maryville College Freshman Alexa Maqueo-Toledo said, “I really enjoy that they don’t just give you advice, but examples of what things [resumes, cover letter, etc.] need to look like professionally.” These resources were implemented for students to take advantage of.
If you have any questions, feel free to come by the Career Center and ask for any further information or contact on social media.
