Lexi Gaertner Nominated for USA South Volleyball Rookie of the Week

The Lady Scots volleyball team competed in their first tournament of the season on Aug. 30-31. During this tournament they went head-to-head against Hanover College, Carroll University, Washington and Lee University and Rhodes College.
Out of these four matches, the Lady Scots were able to pull out a 3-0 victory over Rhodes College.
One of the newest members to the team received a great honor during this tournament. Lexi Gaertner, a 5-foot, 11-inch freshman from Tampa, Fla., had an outstanding performance against Rhodes College, adding six kills to the Lady Scots 25-22, 25-19, 25-18 victory as an outside hitter.
It was this performance that The USA South noticed, nominating Gaertner as a possible Rookie of the Week.
“I didn’t even expect to see any time on the court,” she said. “Honestly, I was really excited just to be there, dressed out in full-on Scots uniform.”
Gaertner said that she is confident that the Lady Scots are going to have a successful season this year.
“I’m anxious, but not a bad anxious, more of an excited anxious,” Gaertner said. “I know that we are going to kick butt this season because of all the strong, talented players we have on the team.”
Not only is Gaertner excited to participate in the new volleyball season, but Coach Ashley Sutrick is excited for her, as well.
“Lexi has great composure on the court, and she completely stepped up to her role. This was especially surprising since she was put in at key times,” Sutrick said. “She was able to execute without hesitation. That’s one quality that you don’t normally find in freshman players.”
Sutrick said the Lady Scots have the opportunity to grow in more ways than one as its members approach the new season.
“We get to see them grow not only as individuals, but as a team, too,” Sutrick said. “I can’t wait to see how the team uses their abilities and skills to compete as mighty Scots.”
Next up, Lexi and the Lady Scots will travel to face off against Trinity University, Randolph Macon College, Hardin-Simmons University and Virginia Wesleyan College at the Randolph Macon Invitational in Ashland, Va.
