Men’s Soccer Scots continue to roll
The Maryville College men’s team was predicted to finish No. 5 in the USA South Conference, but they could outperform this notion. So far this season, MC is the only team in the conference with an overall winning record.
On Saturday, Sept. 19 the Scots competed in a showdown against the USA South preseason No. 1 Methodist. The Scots held a 2-1 lead late in the game off of 2 precise strikes from Thomas Palmer. A penalty kick call saw the match end in a 2-2 draw, with no goals scored in overtime.
The Scots also played conference opponent Ferrum on Friday, Sept. 25. The Scots showed up and won in a 3-1 come-back. This was highlighted by winger George Davies’ finish to take a 2-1 lead. After this they would travel to North Carolina to take on yet another conference foe against William Peace. The Scots defeated Peace 7-1. Cody Vankerschaever led all scorers with 2 goals for the Scots.
On Wednesday, Sept. 30 the Scots defeated another conference opponent, LaGrange, 9-0. Caleb Lucas recorded a hat trick in this game, aiding him in earning another offensive player of the week honor.
On Saturday, Oct. 3 the Scots traveled to Pennsylvania and defeated Washington and Jefferson College 5-0. The Scots currently hold a 9-1-1 record.
“This is the greatest start in Maryville College history,” said head coach pepe Fernandez.
The Scots have begun their season strong.
“I think we will win the conference championship and turn some heads in the NCAA tournament,” said Vankerschaever.
