Young Scots Make Impact on Golf Team

The Maryville men’s golf team is continuing to draw momentum early in the season.

The Scots have performed well in the last two events, held at the Tom Kinder Invitational in Harrisonburg, Va. and the Rhodes College Classic in Tunica, Miss.

Some of the key younger players, including sophomores Brian Bononno, Wes Hood and Doug Whitten, have all played some very meaningful golf outings early in the season.

Whitten posted an impressive 3-under-par at the Tom Kinder Invitational, which tallied up to a 141. Whitten earned an individual spot for a tie at third place. The tournament was played at Lakeview Golf Course. Whitten’s performance earned his first career USA South Rookie of the Week and his second at the Rhodes College invitational.

The Scots continued at the Oglethorpe College Royal Lakes Invitational Oct. 5-6 in Flowery Branch, Ga.  During the first round of the invitational, Scots Trey McNear and Whitten both produced 79s in the first round of the invitational to lead the MC linksmen during the opening round.

McNear started his round with back-to-back double bogeys, and settled in to finish with a one-under-par. Whitten shot a 42 on his opening nine holes before settling down with a one over par 37 over his final nine.

During the second round of the invitational, freshman Wil Manuel lead MC with a two-under-par 70, including an eagle. This marked Manuel’s first sub-par round as a college player.

On Oct. 19-20, the Scots will travel to the Chik-fil-A Invitational, the last match of the fall. This tournament will be played at Stonebridge Golf Club in Rome, Ga.
