Isaac’s Cafe reopens after renovations with positive student feedback
According to staff and administration, recent renovations in Isaac’s Cafe have gone without a hitch, despite concerns about the old building.
Dr. Ben Stubbs, vice president of Maryville College and dean of students, said, “It was a really smooth process. We had a great contractor [who] coordinated the whole thing.”
Isaac’s employees echoed this sentiment, reporting they were able to learn the current kitchen layout in just one day. The renovations have proven to be a significant improvement for the Isaac’s employees, and they have found their jobs easier and less stressful since.
Despite early blunders with confused orders, the new kiosk system seems to be making the establishment more efficient. Now, according to an Isaac’s employee, staff can spend less time at the register and more time preparing orders. Students have also shared positive feedback about the kiosk system and the new ease of ordering and customizing meals.
“I like the kiosk system,” Abby Woodard (‘28) said. “It’s worked out well for me.”
Along with the new kitchen and ordering system, Isaac’s has gotten an aesthetic makeover to make the space more enjoyable and comfortable.
“The space was in need of a little bit of attention,” Stubbs said. “Adding our school colors, some additional engagement features, and new furniture… has really created a new energy in the space… it feels more like a true Maryville College location, rather than just a food outlet that could have been anywhere.”
Stubbs hinted at an exciting opportunity for students to be directly involved in the decor of Isaac’s Cafe. They will be accepting admissions and proposals soon for a student art contest. They hope to finalize an art piece by the end of the semester, but won’t have anything on the walls until the fall semester of the 2026-27 academic year. More details on the contest will be available soon.
Stubbs also mentioned that a dartboard is on the way, as well as sand for the shuffleboard table, adding to the recreational aspects of the space.
Student feedback remains a top priority, and so far, it has been overwhelmingly positive. Students have been seen enjoying the games and couches, as well as the food.
Josh White (‘27) expressed his enjoyment of the pool table and new decor and said, “I think Isaac’s is a lot better this year.”
“I think the renovations look great,” Woodard said. “Itt looks a lot more clean and open. I’ve always loved Isaac’s, and I still love it.” She expressed her enjoyment of the new features, such as the pool table and comfortable seating, as well as the latest menu items, such as the smash burger and Isaac’s sauce.
Da’Rell Brown (‘28) said, “I think the burgers are amazing this year.”
Both White and Brown expressed their desire for the Philly cheesesteak to be brought back, and Woodard would like to bring back the grilled chicken sandwich.
Stubbs emphasized the influence of student feedback on the menu changes. Surveys found that Maryville College students were more interested in Southwestern “Tex-Mex” items than in other Fresh Ideas college locations. This finding has resulted in the inclusion of burrito bowls, quesadillas, and nachos on the Isaac’s menu.
Administration continues to work toward improving student experiences. Feedback and suggestions from students are welcome. Improving efficiency remains a pressing matter. The kiosks and kitchen renovation have helped, but there is always room for improvement.
