The Replacements and former Guns N’ Roses member Tommy Stinson to perform at The Bird and the Book on Wed. Sept. 23

The Bird and the Book announced on Instagram on Aug. 25 that rock musician Tommy Stinson, known for his bass work with The Replacements and Guns N’ Roses, will perform at the venue on Wednesday, Sept. 23. 

Stinson is touring the eastern United States, with stops in Washington, D.C., Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Alabama, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Tennessee, including Maryville.

Stinson said he is touring independently and traveling to more “off the radar” locations. He said doing so allows him to make more profit and interact more with fans. 

“It gets me in an intimate position with the fans,” Stinson said. “Which works out good for me because I’m a bit of a social butterfly.” 

Stinson is currently working on a new album that will be his first solo release since “One Man Munity” in 2011. He said he has learned a lot over the years and plans to take a different approach with this release. The album will include old and new songs, and he plans to release one song every month or two starting in 2027.

“I’m not going to do it the traditional way we used to do records because there’s no real formula anymore,” Stinson said. 

The Replacements got their start through college radio. Other stations wouldn’t play the band’s music, so student-run stations helped popularize it, and Stinson recalled playing shows at colleges and universities during that time. He said the dynamic between college promotion and the music industry has changed since then.

“It was a different time, and it was a whole different space for music,” Stinson said. “But it could be that they’re not calling me for those shows like they used to.” 

Stinson also reflected on his time in Guns N’ Roses, from 1998 to 2014, saying the experience helped him grow as a musician. He said one of the most important lessons was learning to collaborate with musicians from different backgrounds and genres.

“When I joined the band, it was a bunch of different players and original members, and they all came from different backgrounds,” Stinson said. “The interesting part was trying to make that work and get a record out of it, which we did.” 

Lisa Misosky, owner of The Bird and the Book, said she is optimistic about the show and expects it to sell out. She said she is personally excited, having grown up listening to The Replacements.

“When I think about the soundtrack of part of my life, it involves several songs and albums from The Replacements,” Misosky said. 

Misosky said a smaller venue like The Bird and the Book allows for a more intimate connection between performer and fans. She added that the focus should remain on Stinson, calling it special to host a rock veteran in Maryville.

“I’m really happy and honored to be able to play a small role in this event,” Misosky said. 

Misosky also noted that The Dungeon, the media store located below Southland Books, sells Replacements LPs. She said staff are letting customers know Stinson will be performing in town soon.
