Fighting Scots prove victorious, beat Methodist Monarchs 35-26
Maryville College hosted Methodist University this Saturday for the 2013 homecoming football game.
Honaker Field was filled to capacity, with rows of fans left standing field-side.
The atmosphere surrounding the game was rich with the Maryville College history, many generations of alumni in attendance and interacting with current MC students.
Most importantly, the Fighting Scots gave fans of all ages what they were hoping for, emerging victorious with a 35-26 win over the Methodist Monarchs.
Trailing 7-0 following the Monarchs’ opening drive, the Scots maintained their composure and answered with a 70-yard drive capped with an 11-yard run by Travis Felder.
The running game was vital to the Scots offense with a total of 201 yards, led by quarterback Evan Pittenger with 115.
Felder had 69 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
The Scots’ special teams helped provide the offense with good field position with blocked punts by Cody Martin and Gabe Johnson.
Wide receiver Blake Williams led the team in receiving with 122 yards on six catches.
A 31-yard connection from Pittenger to wide receiver Ed Jonson just before half time gave the Scots a 28-10 lead.
After the half, the Monarchs showed they would not go down without a fight.
Two unanswered touchdowns later, a field goal by Methodist pushed the score to 28-26 with 9:12 left in the game.
However, the Scots’ high-octane offense came through when needed, putting together a 59-yard drive ending with another touchdown by Johnson.
The Scots defense stopped the Monarchs, giving Maryville a 35-26 victory.
The USA South Conference victory moved Maryville to 3-1.
The Maryville homecoming tradition lived on in amazing fashion, with a massive turnout and a highly entertaining game.
The Fighting Scots will host conference rival Averett next Saturday, Oct. 5.
