J.E.W club growth spurs excitement
Jewish Education and Wellness (J.E.W.) fosters community engagement and learning for anyone curious about Jewish heritage and practices. President Cameron Yodis (‘27) started this club to help avoid prejudice and misunderstanding about Jewish culture.
Yodis said, “Judaism is important to me because it’s one of the things that affects how I view the world and act in it.” She wanted a place to be able to share her view on the view to anyone who wants to listen.
“I want Jewish students to have a community where their culture is celebrated, without being forced into political or uncomfortable conversations.” Yodis’ goal for this club is to spread awareness about Jewish culture and holidays while having fun.
One way she is doing this is by planning to celebrate Jewish holidays on campus, including Hanukkah, Yom Kippur, and Rosh Hashanah. In 2023, Yodis coordinated with the Humanities department for the Hanukkah celebration, but by starting a club, she says it will be easier to fund events like this in the future.
“I want people to know that they don’t have to be Jewish or know anything about the culture to come to the meetings,” Yodis said. To support this mission, the club will hold informational meetings the week before each holiday or event, helping students learn about Jewish traditions.
Edie LaBoube (‘27) has attended the last few meetings of J.E.W., and emphasized the club’s inviting environment.
“The J.E.W. club has a very welcoming atmosphere. Cam makes everyone feel comfortable, and the meetings are laid back while also being very informative,” LaBoube said.
Treasurer Austin McKee (‘26) has been a member since the start of the club. He said, “J.E.W. club is extremely important for broadening perspectives on campus, and I’m very excited to be a part of something new that can educate and celebrate the intricacies of Jewishness.”
J.E.W club is important to the community for students who want to learn and encourage acceptance. The club is open for anyone who wants to join. Meetings are held biweekly on Fridays at 4 p.m. in Bartlett 101, and upcoming events will be announced in Today@MC.
