Maryville College Launches Groundbreaking AI Initiative: Your Voice Matters

EDITOR’S NOTE: The following is, ironically enough, an AI-generated news item about the forthcoming MC AI Initiative, the first step of which seeks student input and feedback on the use of AI through a survey (listed below). Whether this article — again, written entirely by AI — concerns or delights you (or even if you have no opinion!), please give faculty and administrators the benefit of your opinion at the survey link.

Maryville College is embarking on an exciting journey with the launch of the MC AI Initiative, aiming to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) skills into our curriculum and campus life. This innovative project is part of a prestigious year-long program with the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U).

The initiative seeks to equip students with both human-centered and technical skills, empowering them to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of AI in problem-solving. Students will learn to discern when AI-only, human-only, or ‘co-intelligence’ approaches are most appropriate in various situations.

To kickstart the project, we invite all students to participate in a survey. Your feedback is crucial in shaping our AI-related plans. Check your email for the survey link or use the QR code provided. As a bonus, students who complete the survey can enter a drawing for MC swag, including beach towels, hats, shirts, and mugs.

“As we integrate AI into our curriculum, it’s important that we hear from students,” stated faculty member Jan Taylor. “We are interested in students’ perspective on how we can help them use these tools in ways that support learning rather than short-circuiting it.”

Students already have access to AI tools through the college, including Microsoft’s Co-Pilot, available at no charge through our Office suite.

Career Center Director Trzaskowski adds, “Understanding how AI works and how to use AI tools effectively will be important for students when they enter the workforce, especially considering that more and more organizations are quickly adopting the technology.”

The MC team includes Academic Dean Liz Perry-Sizemore, Assistant Academic Dean Heather McMahon, Career Center Director Niklas Trzaskowski, Professor of History Doug Sofer, Assistant Professor of Mathematics Chathuri Perera, and Senior Lecturer Jan Taylor.

Stay tuned for more updates on the MC AI Initiative and how you can shape the future of education at Maryville College.
