SPB Cinema Nights bring students together
The Student Programming Board is a group at Maryville College that provides the campus with activities and events to break up the humdrum of the academic routine and engage the student body. Their main goal is to bring the campus together and create connections between each other. The group is made up of many diverse students. They stand out by helping other organizations and providing ideas to other campus activities.
Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with one of the members of SPB at MC and discuss this year’s Cinema Night events. I met with Caitlin Shearer who is part of the group that has the privilege of suggesting movies for the Cinema Nights.
Ms. Shearer was nice enough to share that SPB has been successful in pursuing its goal of bring students together. The events and activities provided by SPB have been spread throughout campus from word of mouth and on social media. The events are often big and are filled with numerous Maryville College students.
The Cinema Nights event has happened multiple times on campus and, according to Shearer, the movies played at these events are chosen depending on the theme of the month. The events and activities provided by SPB usually take place twice per month, occurring every other week. They try to have them back-to-back in order to keep the community together.
SPB is made up of four different groups that meet once a week. The groups have a great relationship with each other as they spend plenty of social time together. Shearer says that chemistry in organizations like SPB is important. Maybe that is the reason why SPB has been successful at accomplishing its goal on campus
