Yarn, needles and friendship: Inside the new Crochet Club at Maryville College
From the MC Pride Club to the Student Government Association (SGA), Maryville College offers many opportunities when choosing a club to partake in. But what about a space dedicated to the beauty of artistry? Maryville College now introduces a dedicated craft club— Crochet Club!
After years without a formal space for crafting and creativity, students can come together, unwind and create something beautiful, one stitch at a time.
As the afternoon of October 28th marked the commencement meeting for the club, many students gathered in Anderson Hall to embrace the welcoming atmosphere. Ash Weber (‘28) who is a curious beginner in the crochet world, recalls he “had no clue of what to do, but the leaders successfully taught a basic magic loop technique” to those who are unfamiliar with this art form.
Weber also added that it was “a very calm and inviting place with lots of snacks provided by the club leaders.” Whether you’re a curious beginner or a seasoned pro, the club invites everyone to come join the festivities.
One may think: why crochet, specifically? For one, it’s a craft that’s easy to start and highly portable. All you need is yarn and a hook, and you can crochet anywhere: in the library, at a coffee shop or while hanging out with friends.
Crochet has also seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years, with more people discovering its therapeutic benefits. It’s an ideal way for college students to take a break from the fast pace of academic life and engage in something hands-on and relaxing.
In need of a therapeutic hobby, Jasmine Muecke (‘28) thoroughly enjoyed the crochet club’s first event and appreciated how all of the materials needed for crocheting were provided.
“Anyone who knew how to crochet was also attempting to teach any newcomers,” said Muecke, which helps in developing new friendships and easing any tension among the group.
The club’s leaders are committed to creating an inclusive environment where no one feels excluded or overwhelmed.
Beginner-friendly instructions will be available for those who are just starting, while more advanced crocheters can work on their own or share any helpful tips with others.
For those looking to join a new hobby, learn a relaxing skill or simply meet new people, the Crochet Club is the place to be. Upcoming meetings and events will be announced in Today@MC.
So grab your yarn, hook and a bit of creativity–this new club is ready to stitch together a whole new community at Maryville College!
