Your Zodiac Sign, Your Campus Icon
Miss Fortune is a sophomore English major at Maryville College. Since boarding the wrong flight to McGee Tyson Airport in an attempt to go to Transylvania and instead wandering the Maryville College Woods for shelter, she enrolled and has lived in the basement of Willard House ever since. Her interest in astrology came from a Vienna barista’s accidental quintuple shot in her trademark dirty chai with oat milk. After one sip, she was able to speak to the campus squirrels. They taught her everything they knew about the universe and the stars. Some say that if you leave her a Pearson’s oatmeal raisin cookie in front of the English Department offices in Anderson Hall, you will receive better grades on your essays.
Intro: As the semester begins, life starts to feel too serious too fast. For the first edition, I want you to be able to sit back and enjoy a lighthearted horoscope. These assigned campus icons can bring out an aspect inside you that the current planetary alignment wishes to see come from you. Be confident throughout your academic journey this semester, the universe and I are rooting for you.
Aries: The passionate, confident, and strong Aries represent Maryville College legend Kin Takahashi. Leave it to Aries to not take no for an answer and build their own YMCA on campus with their own bricks. Harness his energy and become the metaphorical captain and quarterback of your football team. Believe in yourself like Kin Takahashi would believe in himself.
Taurus: Catherine Jahns (assistant director of admissions and visitor experience) is a perfect role model for Taurus. Her bright, positive, and free spirited demeanor is reflective of the Taurus subconscious. Catherine never fails to make those around her feel valued, do not forget that you have this superpower as well. Put your charm necklace on, curl your hair, listen to some Taylor Swift, and seize the day the Catherine way!
Gemini: The creativity of Dr. Carl Gombert (professor emeritus) can only be matched by an inspired Gemini. Your talents and thoughts are important dear reader, but they can only be applauded if spoken out loud. Carl Gombert is unafraid to ask questions, make mistakes, and continue learning. These traits could take you to the next step in all aspects of your life. Be not afraid to be yourself, the world needs your input.
Cancer: You never fail to light up a room like the beloved Dolly. Cancer, you are able to read someone’s emotions without ever speaking a word to them. You also have a unique ability to comfort anyone in a deeply profound manner. Cancer is the human form of a lovingly devoted family pet. Your emotions are not your ruin as you may think, they are your sovereignty.
Leo: “B-Wash” has never met a stranger. She seems to walk into a room and know everyone, and everyone knows her. Her confidence seeps out of her and affects everyone around. You have this same ability. Your confidence helps others be confident. Never apologize for having the first hand up in class, laughing so loud that it cuts above the noise, or dancing on Pearson’s lawn to no music. Your energy is contagious.
Virgo: Kevin Grigsby (technical director for the Division of Fine Arts) is analytical, kind hearted, and dependable. He is unafraid to be his true self. Virgo, you are endlessly unique. Let your nerdy side show, your friends love that about you. Your trustworthiness is rivaled by only Kevin. Wear your favorite hyperniche interest t-shirt, geek out about Dungeons and Dragons, and offer sound advice to those around you to truly emulate Kevin Grigsby. You are exactly who you are meant to be.
Libra: Miss Daisy (Metz staff) is the first smiling face many Maryville College students see. Libra, this is how your friends see you. You are a breath of fresh air, a hug on a somber day, and Miss Daisy’s crossword puzzles on an early morning. Your love and care for everything you see is inspiring to all those around you. Your compassion is your weapon. Continue to remind yourself: “What would Daisy do?”.
Scorpio: Daring, confident, and outgoing are the traits many people would pair with Scorpio. You are unafraid to speak your mind and withhold a strong sense of justice. The Coca-Cola Man is the perfect representation of you. He is a mysterious figure, but once you talk to him he becomes an open book. Scorpio, do something that forces you to be seen. Find something that you are passionate about and run with it. Your passion and devotion will win the race.
Sagittarius: Sagittarians are notoriously hard workers. Taylor Swift, Tina Turner, and you. When the average Maryville College student thinks of a hard worker, there is one man that comes to mind: Noah Bowman (director of academic support). His devotion to his work as well as those around him encompasses the values of a Sagittarius. Your passion is contagious. Hard work pays off for Sagittarius in an extremely unique way. Success fuels your soul so allow yourself to succeed.
Capricorn: You are kind, grounded, and wise beyond your years just like Jamie Webster (interim director of interfaith ministry). She always has time to be a listening ear, guiding light, and friend to everyone she meets. Capricorn, you hold these features as well. Your loved ones count on you to bring them back to Earth when they get strung out. Just like everyone needs Jamie Webster in their life, they need you just as profoundly. Your place in this world is surrounded by immense amounts of love.
Aquarius: You may always feel like an outsider, like you are new to town. Gretchen Cook (academic success coach) is new, but definitely not an outsider. She holds a powerful presence that is coupled with a caring conduct. She is confident, brave, and warmhearted. These are all traits that you possess. Your friends see them, allow yourself to see them too. Make your voice heard, stick out from the crowd, and wear a daring outfit. Dr. Cook believes in you, maybe it is time to believe in yourself too.
Pisces: Roger Myers (research and instruction librarian) is the uncontested nicest person on Maryville College campus. Pisces are known for being empathetic, dreamlike, and affectionate. Like Cancer, your compassion for those around you is your superpower, not your weakness. Let the tears come as fluidly as the laughter. Continue to feel everything deeply. Maryville College is lucky to have someone like Roger Myers on their staff, and your friends are lucky to have you just the same.
