MC Scots Baseball wins four of last seven games
The Maryville College Scots Baseball Team hosted their last 7 straight games at The Scotland Yard. During the homestretch, Maryville hosted Wilmington (Ohio) College, Ferrum College and Calvin College.
On Tuesday, March 14, the Scots hosted Wilmington College in an out-of- conference double-header. Michael Hawks chalked up a start on the rubber, and Maryville’s defense held Wilmington to only one run until the sixth inning.
Led by Wilmington miscues and a Derek Hurt bomb, the Scots took a 6-1 lead into the sixth inning. In the sixth, the Quakers’ bats came alive and rallied to a 6-5 deficit. In the seventh inning, First Baseman Drew Johnson hit a dinger to left and gave the Scots a 7-5 advantage. Wilmington added a run in the ninth, but Joe Jones finished off the Quakers with his fourth save of the season. Maryville took the first of two games, winning 7-6.
In the second ballgame, Jeremy Haggerty took the mound for the Scots. The left-hander kept Wilmington off the scoreboard through six innings. He struck out seven Quaker batters, while only giving up 4 hits. Back in the second inning, Eric Hart roped an RBI single that brought Johnny Carpenter across the place. Then, Hurt laid down a perfect squeeze to bring in Drew Henry, and the Scots took an early 2-0 lead. In the fifth, Drew Johnson banged a three-run double off the left field wall, and Hart would once again come through with a RBI-double to score Johnson.
Maryville led 6-0 through seven innings. Wilmington got on the board in the eighth with two runs, but the Scots would take the series with a 6-2 win.
On Saturday, March 18, the Scots hosted the Ferrum College Panthers for the first two games of a three game USA South Conference series at the Scotland Yard. In the first contest of the day, Ferrum’s starting pitcher through a complete game, giving up one unearned run on four hits. Ferrum took the first game by a score of 9-1.
In the second game of the day, Maryville was held scoreless through five innings before the bats came alive. The Scots put 4 runs on the board in the sixth, and 5 more in the ninth; However, a 7 run sixth inning led the Panthers to a 12-9 victory over Maryville.
The next day, the Scots looked to avoid a series sweep against the Ferrum College Panthers. Freshman right-hander Joe Logsdon started on the hill for the Scots, and gave up only two runs through 5.1 innings. The 2-0 Ferrum lead was cut in half when Bryce Redaja hit his sixth dinger of the year over the right field fence. The Maryville comeback would be completed in a wild eighth inning.
Alden Wright led off for the Scots in the eighth, and was hit by a pitch. Then, pinch runner Hayden Hollingsworth took second on a botched pickoff attempt. Next, Sam Jokerst’s sacrifice moved Hollingsworth to third, and he would score on a passed ball. With the game tied at 2, Drew Henry came to the plate with a chance to deliver, and he did. Henry doubled down the left field line, then advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on another wild pitch. Joe Jones earned his third win of the year, going 3.2 innings, with 5 K’s. The Scots took the third game over the Panthers, 3-2.
On Monday, March 20, the Scots hosted Calvin College in an out-of-conference double-header at the Scotland Yard. In the first game, Maryville would use two 4-run innings to earn their fourteenth win of the year.
Calvin struck in the top of the first inning with two runs, but the Scots would counter in the bottom half of the inning. With the bases loaded, Bryce Redaja smashed a three-run triple. Alden Wright’s sac-fly brought home Redaja, and the Scots led 4-2. Calvin added three more runs in the top of the second inning and took a 5-4 lead.
In the bottom half of the forth, two singles and a hit batter loaded the Maryville bases once again. Wright would be hit by a pitch that brought home Henry. Next, Logan Hayes would step up to the place and deliver a three-run triple to the gap in right-center. The Scots led 8-5 going into the fifth before a Calvin College two-run jack that brought the score to 8-7.
In the seventh, Jordan Norton would earn his first save of the year, and the Scots won 8-7. In the second game of the day, Calvin College would use a 5-run eighth inning to earn a 7-4 win over the Scots.
Maryville currently sits in fourth place in the USA South Conference Standings with a 14-12, 7-5 conference record. Maryville will end the week of Spring Break at Huntingdon College before returning home on March 28.
