Maryville College baseball team season recap
With only two games left in the postseason, Maryville College’s baseball team has proven that their hard work has not gone unrewarded. The team’s senior members have been a part of more wins than any other class since the team’s founding in 1876.
This season the team boasts a .290 batting average, which, compared to the all-time league average of between .260 and .275, is quite impressive. They are 26-8 overall and 10-8 in the conference.
What does this mean for the team? They advance to the USA 2018 South Baseball Tournament which consists of the eight top teams in the conference. The tournament begins Wednesday, April 11, and ends on Saturday, April 14. Maryville College’s baseball team has yet to win the USA South Baseball Tournament since joining the conference in 2012.
Maryville will play Piedmont College, 14-4, on April 11 at 3:30 p.m. at Cleveland Field at Phil Williamson Stadium in LaGrange, Ga. Maryville has lost to Piedmont at the last three consecutive conference games.
However, the team has shown incredible tenacity and sportsmanship on and off the field. As anyone who walks past the field or has a student athlete classmate knows, these players are always striving for excellence.
It shows in both their team victories with 227 hits in 34 games and their individual achievements.
On April 2, Maryville College sophomore Alden Wright was named the USA South player of the week after an incredible batting average of .692 in four wins.
This season and postseason, the team has proven they have learned how to grow and prosper as a team. Their support for each other has garnered support on campus as they have a home attendance average of 191 students. Let’s continue to support the team by sending positive thoughts their way as they continue on their journey.
