Exciting Release of Impressions 51st Volume
Maryville College’s Impressions Magazine is releasing its 51st volume in the upcoming weeks. Impressions Managing Editor Meredith Howell (26’) and the rest of the Impressions staff invite students to attend a party celebrating the upcoming release.
The launch party will be held on April 22 from 4-6 p.m. on Pearson’s Lawn near the CCM. “All contributors, students, staff, faculty, and friends are welcome to attend. We will have cupcakes, a poetry reading, and more fun activities,” Howell said.
The upcoming issue will be full of submissions that every student will want to read, beginning with a written announcement of the “Hall Of Ethical Thinking” contest winners before introducing art, poetry and prose.
This particular volume is estimated to have around 200 pieces featured, totalling 240 pages.
“Impressions is a great opportunity to get your work published. Submissions can be anonymous if requested, as well. With that being said, we encourage everyone to submit 3-4 pieces of art, poetry, or prose in an email to [email protected],” explained Howell.
Impressions can be a great opportunity for many students. A great example of this was seen at this month’s Maryville College Celebration of Student Achievement.
Impressions presented awards to three students in three different categories. Kayana Donegan (27’) won for best poetry, Ansley Sizemore (28’) won for Best Art or Photography and Karla Garcia-Martinez (25’) won for Best Prose.
“Receiving this award has made me feel undoubtedly grateful as well as given me the motivation to keep creating and discover just how far my art can take me.” Sizemore said.
Impression wants to encourage all students to submit their work, even if they’re not expecting anything to come out of it.
“We love to see work from a wide variety of students, staff, and faculty, so my best advice is: don’t be afraid to submit. Impressions is a collection of works produced by the MC community, and we are a very talented community,” encouraged Howell.
Submitting your work can be understandably frightening, but many say it is a great learning experience that was worth it in the end.
“The idea of submitting to Impressions was initially daunting because of the vulnerability in some of my poems, but I ultimately decided to take the leap.” Donegan said.
“College is all about new experiences, and confronting fear is a great way to initiate growth.
Donegans poem titled “Mama’s Promise Land” is about her own mothers struggles immigrating from Brazil into the US.
It features themes of culture shock that comes with the immigration experience and resilience in the face of grief, specifically in grieving one’s homeland, family, and identity.
“The significance of literature in bringing people together cannot be overstated. I’m glad to be a part of something that can help facilitate a sense of community at Maryville College,” said Donegan.
It’s important to note that as creative outlets, many of the stories may have triggering content. Readers should heed content warnings. As a healthy reminder, the counseling center is available for all students.
Students can read these works first hand in the upcoming issue of Impressions. Keep an eye on Impressions social media pages for the official release date announcement coming soon.
