Why MC?: Current students share why Maryville College was the best choice for them
As the academic year comes to a close, high school seniors everywhere are making important college decisions.
Many Maryville College students may remember weighing the pros and cons of different schools, and eventually landing on their perfect college. Some knew where they were going, others not as much. However, most agree that they ended up where they needed to be.
Rayna Welsch (‘28) shared how coming to MC was unexpected for her. She had plans to go to cosmetology school; however, due to personal conflicts, she chose to attend college. Welsch chose MC.
“I arrived, not knowing what I wanted to major in, feeling pulled in different directions. But now, I am finally settled, and I genuinely feel happy. It takes time to find your people here, but once you do, this college becomes something truly special,” said Welsch.
Despite her change of plans, Welsch stays involved in the campus community. She is showcasing her care as she runs for vice president of the sophomore class for the 2025-2026 school year.
Some current students knew MC was where they wanted to go from the beginning. Ansley Hoard (‘28) shared that she had wanted to attend MC since she was in middle school.
“I love the architecture and where it is located. It also has a lot of classes that other colleges don’t,” said Hoard.
Michel Gonzalez (‘27) shared her experience coming to MC as a Mexican-American.
“Being able to fit in in a college without feeling out of place or less than because of my color is one of the main reasons why I choose MC. Alan Miraflores was a key person, because, since he spoke Spanish, he was able to answer all questions for my parents and help them feel comfortable enough to let me move on campus,” explained Gonzalez.
Alyssa Kennedy (‘28) shared what drove her decision and how her experience as a Bonner Scholar has been thus far.
“So many teachers that I looked up to at my high school graduated from Maryville so I got a lot of first-hand accounts about the college. After almost officially completing my first year of college, I know I made the right decision. The Bonner Scholarship helped create a meaningful foundation of my experience, creating lasting relationships and meaningful impact on campus and the community. The professors are wonderful and truly want you to succeed,” Kennedy shared.
McKenna Marr (‘28) shared her experience in her decision to choose MC.
“The overall environment and small campus life are what enticed me to choose Maryville. Having everything within walking distance has been incredible and something I am super thankful for. The school also offered programs that were fitting for me, and I appreciated how they plug you into internships and careers before you even graduate,” said Marr.
Maya Rivera (‘28) also shared what drove her decision and how life at MC has been so far.
“I chose Maryville because of the small campus and how beautiful it is in the fall, as well as the scholarships I could get. My experience so far has been great, I have met some great people and learned many things,” Rivera stated.
Austin McKee (‘26) discussed what had him choose MC.
“I chose MC because I saw the opportunity in a small, community-minded school environment. I wanted to continue my Bachelor’s with the intention of forming connections and friendships that will last a lifetime. Once I toured Maryville College, I knew it could provide me with that opportunity,” said Mckee.
Many current students have meaningful connections with MC, and, hopefully, the tradition will continue as we welcome the class of ‘29 in the fall.
