Fall in full bloom at MC: students’ thoughts on the turning of the season
Fall has officially arrived at Maryville College. The leaves are changing, the weather is cooling down, and students are soaking in the season before winter’s chill hits the air.
Autumn is one of the most celebrated times of year at MC. From homecoming to Halloween, the campus goes all out with fall festivities.
Anderson Hall is decorated from top to bottom with spooky decor for the entire month of October, and alumni return for a weekend to revisit their old stomping grounds. But these events feel even more special when paired with the natural beauty of campus.
Maryville College is located in the heart of the Smoky Mountains, on 140 acres of wood filled with cedars, pines, and even an apple orchard. The main campus is just as scenic, with tree-lined walkways of every color. For students like Morgan Browning (‘29) the beautiful colors of the trees on campus are the best part of the season.
“The best thing about fall is how cozy and beautiful the campus looks,” said Feliz Juarez (‘29). The changing scenery makes even a routine walk to class feel like a moment worth remembering.”
“I feel like I’m in Gilmore Girls or When Harry Met Sally,” said Jenny Ribble (‘27). Many students agree that the crisp air, colorful leaves, and peaceful surroundings create a calm feeling that surrounds the campus.
The cooler weather also brings certain academic benefits. According to Arianna Deel (‘28), the fall atmosphere makes studying much more enjoyable.
“There is a calm that helps you focus and concentrate,” said Deel.
But the fall season at MC goes much further than pretty leaves. Kathryn Bornhoeft (‘28) says she loves the fall-themed menu at the local coffee house Vienna Coffee. Even students who normally prefer warmer weather find reasons to enjoy the season.
“I love the free coffee, hot cocoa, and apple cider around campus. I love a good hot drink,” said Alden Sundstrom (‘27).
Whether it’s strolling through the woods, going to the homecoming game, or just sitting for a moment in the crisp air, fall gives students a chance to slow down and appreciate life.
A fall at MC is never one to forget. From beloved traditions to its gorgeous view, every fallen leaf shows what makes Maryville College truly special.
