Lady Scots basketball team ready to live up to pre-season expectations
The 2015-2016 Maryville College’s women’s basketball team is predicted to have a winning season for the third consecutive year.
In the USA South Athletic Conference’s pre-season poll, Maryville was predicted to win the 2016 conference title. With 143 points, MC came in 21 points above Ferrum, who holds the number two spot. For the past two seasons, the Scots have clinched first in conference and brought the title home to Maryville.
Senior Mackenzie Puckett is also predicted to have a fantastic season. D3hoops.com picked her as a pre-season All-American. The 5’11’’ forward from Franklin, Tenn. also nabbed a spot in the Top 24 players in the country from D-III News.
In the first game of the season against Centre College, the Scots won 58 to 51.
Mackenzie Puckett was a game leader of course, scoring 21 of those 58 points. Puckett also had one block, two steals, three assists and four rebounds in the game.
Another game leader was Allyson Freiermuth. The 5’10’’ junior forward had six rebounds, one block and two assists against the Centre Colonels.
Junior Mindy Brackins also had a phenomenal game. The guard, who is 5’9’’, had a total of 10 points. Her and Puckett were the only two to score in the double digits.
