MC alumnus Kelley Harris takes over as general manager of RT Lodge

Gary Doyle announced his retirement in November 2025, after having spent 19 years with RT Lodge, a restaurant and inn located in the Maryville College Woods. Maryville College alumnus Kelley Harris (‘05) took over Doyle’s position as general manager at the start of the new year.

Harris spent over 20 years working for Blackberry Farm in Walland. During her time at Blackberry Farm, she held various roles. One especially notable role was helping build and oversee the events program.

After her time at Blackberry Farm, Harris spent two years working with Oldham Hospitality. Oldham Hospitality oversees several establishments in Townsend, including Dancing Bear Lodge and Appalachian Bistro, and Peaceful Side Social. There, Harris was the vice president of hospitality services.

“It’s been perfect, what I did in Blackberry over many years, and what I did in the past two with Oldham, all cumulatively come together as a really excellent background to be able to do the things I do at RT Lodge,” Harris said.

Not only does Harris have an abundance of experience in hospitality, but she also holds longstanding ties and connections with Maryville and the MC campus.

Harris’s late grandmother, Jane Richardson, worked at the College for 21 years. In her time at the College, Richardson became the dean of students. Having spent much time with her grandmother, Harris practically grew up on the campus.

Before Ruby Tuesday’s lease agreement in 1997, which coined the name “RT Lodge,” the “Main House” was a restaurant and event facility called “Morningside Inn.” Growing up around the campus, Harris would visit the Morningside Inn.

“I remember coming here as a little girl and having tea with my grandmother,” said Harris.

Harris commented on Doyle’s legacy not only at RT Lodge, but also for many hospitality services in the area.

“I think most people who are in hospitality in Blount and Knox county are aware or have been impacted by Gary in some way – even if they don’t know it,” said Harris.

Harris officially joined the RT Lodge team in mid-December 2025, overlapping with Doyle’s last few weeks before retirement to create a smooth transition. Harris said Doyle passed the torch gracefully.

“He was so kind and wonderful, providing me with knowledge and history – and always making himself available,” said Harris.

Doyle told The Daily Times his thoughts as he transitioned into his retirement, speaking highly of Harris’s skills.

“Stepping away is bittersweet, but it brings me such comfort to know the Lodge is entering its next chapter under someone who understands the heart of hospitality,” Doyle said. “Kelley’s leadership style and passion for hospitality are exactly what this extraordinary property and its remarkable team need.”

Harris discussed her respect and appreciation for Doyle and all he has done to develop RT Lodge and hospitality services in the area, as she steps into his position.

“It’s quite the honor to be able to step into a role that he created for the past 19 years,” said Harris.
