Orange and Garnet Game, Junior Day a Success
On Thursday, May 4 the Maryville College Fighting Scots Football Program had their second annual Orange and Garnet Game. The day was declared a ‘Junior Day’, as many high school Junior football recruits came to visit Maryville College and Honaker Field. The day was kicked off in the alumni gym, where Head Coach Shaun Hayes, with the help of four of his players, unveiled the new Adidas football jerseys.
The new home jerseys are garnet with white numbers with a grey trim, and say SCOTS in white across the chest with a grey trim. The away jerseys are white with silver numbers and a garnet trim, and say MARYVILLE in silver across the chest with a garnet trim. The helmets will stay white, but were unveiled with four different logo styles. Both the home and away jerseys were both sported with grey and white pants.
The afternoon continued as the Scots, wearing their new jerseys, made their way onto Honaker Field for the Orange and Garnet Game. The Scots were split into their position groups and began running drills. The Scots ran through drills for about an hour as recruits, family, friends and students looked on. The Orange and Garnet Game marked the end of Maryville’s spring practice.
The Scots finished the 2016-2017 campaign with an 8-2 overall record, and a 6-1 record in USA South Conference play. The Scots earned a co-Conference Championship with Huntingdon College, however did not earn a bid for post-season play.
The Scots look forward to a successful 2017-2018 season, although they will lose All-USA South quarterback Nick Myers. The Scots still have returning running back Elijah Chenier, who finished first in overall yards, yards per game, and yards per rush in the USA South.
Chenier tied for second in the USA South with 10 touchdowns. The Scots will look to improve on the defensive side of the ball over the off-season. The Maryville Defense ranked eighth in the USA South, averaging 32.3 points per game.
The Scots will open the 2017-2018 at home against Berry College on September 2. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
