Literacy Corps to host Dr. Seuss’ birthday party
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go,” said Dr. Suess.
Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, was born on March 2, 1904. Every year for about seven years, the Maryville College Literacy Corps has been celebrating the birth of Dr. Seuss with children in the community, MC staff and students.
The Literacy Corps is an organization that works with people in the community who are seeking further education than they currently have.
“Our aim as an organization is to promote literacy in our community engaging Maryville College students in literacy based community service, for example working in ESL class rooms, local schools, HiSet (High School Graduation Equivalency) tutoring, and much more,” said Brittany Miller, Vice President of the Literacy Corps.
The birthday party will happen on Thursday, March 10 from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. in Isaac’s Café. There will be games, puzzles and cake for everyone to enjoy. There will also be a reading of one of Dr. Seuss’ books.
“This year, the cast of ‘Seussical the Musical’ has paired with our organization to add a new dimension of interaction and fun,” said Miller.
The cast is planning on performing songs from the production for the children to enjoy. Children will also be able to interact with the cast members at the event.
The cast will also be performing at the Blount County Library on March 12 for another event celebrating the life of Dr. Seuss.
Literacy Corps is expecting to have between 30-40 community members there and would like to encourage staff and students to come out and join the fun. There will be local media stations at the event to report on it.
