MC Tennis Falls to UVA-Wise
Both the men’s and women’s Maryville College tennis programs fell to University of Virginia-Wise at Virginia-Wise on Sunday, Sept. 27. The Scots began their fall pre-season early in the semester to get a jump start on preparing for the official spring 2016 season.
In their first match of the 2015-2016 season, the MC men were defeated by Virginia-Wise with an overall score of 8-1, and the MC women were defeated 7-2.
The Lady Scots claimed two defaults in their singles matches. MC senior Maddy Little defeated Dasha Tyschenko of UVW by default, and freshman Savannah Bain defeated Bailey Christoforatos of UVW by default.
UVW’s women routed the Lady Scots in four matches. Haley Thacker defeated Jenny Pavlides 6-0, 6-0; Mackenzie Lawson defeated Caitlin Jennings 6-1, 6-0; Junetta Nuckles defeated Katie Stephens 6-0, 6-0; and Montana Hill defeated McKennah Francis 6-2, 6-2.
Men’s singles claimed one win over UVW. Freshman Marcos Escuerdo Herrero defeated Oleg Kopychenko 6-2, 6-2. This was Herrero’s first collegiate match.
But, UVW proved insurmountable in the remaining matches. Andril Rutnytskyi defeated Daniel Silva 3-6, 6-2, 13-11 in a difficult tie-breaker. Both players fought hard in the longest match-up of the event. Ethan Herron defeated Gabriel Rodriguez 6-2. 6-3. Viktor Tunnikov defeated Boomer Russell 6-1, 6-2; Noah Aldridge defeated Braxton Lang 6-3, 6-2; and Blake Pientka defeated Will Martalla 7-6 (3), 6-2.
UVW took all of both the men’s and women’s doubles matches.
Both programs look ahead to improve during the fall season. The men and women have both begun 6 a.m. workouts along with their daily practices in the afternoon.
On Tuesday, Oct. 20 both programs will host Johnson University at 2:00 p.m. for their final fall season match.
